Earth’s amazing dance – Aurora Borealis
The Northern Lights occur when charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a spectacular light display dancing across the sky in green, pink, red, and purple colours. This phenomenon can only be seen at northern latitudes and is most active from September to April. The Northern Lights appear high above the Earth’s surface and are often visible at night in the polar regions.
Can the Northern Lights be seen in the South?
Well it depends on how far south you mean. In the south of Norway, Northern lights can be seen and there have been rare sightings of Northern lights in Oslo and even further south in Europe.
In the far southern regions of earth – in the Antarctic – this phenomenon is also common, there it’s called Aurora Australis or the Southern Lights.
What Is So Special About The Northern Lights?
Here at Støtt we love the Northern Lights, but you might wonder what is so special about the phenomenon. Here are our reasons for going on this adventure:
- Natural Beauty: The Northern Lights are a stunning spectacle of nature, with colors ranging from green, pink, and red to purple and blue.
- Scientific Wonder: The Aurora Borealis is a complex scientific phenomenon that involves the interaction of the sun, Earth’s magnetic field, and the atmosphere.
- Rare Occurrence: While the Northern Lights can be seen in high-latitude regions, they are not a daily occurrence and require specific conditions to appear.
- Cultural Significance: The Aurora Borealis has held cultural significance for many indigenous cultures throughout history
Where is the best place to see the Northern Lights?
We believe that Støtt is the best place to see the Northern Lights, and here are a few reasons why:
- Low light pollution: Støtt is far from the city lights, offering a crystal-clear 360-degree view of the sky. Light pollution plays a key factor in the visibility of the Polar Lights. Støtt is unaffected by the light pollution, where it may make the northern light invisible other places.
- Unique location: Støtt’s location provides an unforgettable view of the horizon surrounded by fjords and mountains. Not only do we have the Northern lights, here you can view them in our stunning surroundings.
- Guided Northern Lights tours: Experienced local guides that help you understand and photograph the Northern Lights of Norway, increasing your chances of witnessing them. We bring a level of hospitality that we believe is just as important as witnessing the Northern Lights.

Best time to see the Northern Lights
For the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights, visit Støtt between September and March. The darkest months, especially December and January, provide optimal conditions. Winter nights are longer and darker than summer nights, providing more opportunities for the Aurora Borealis to be seen. Winter weather often brings colder temperatures and drier air, leading to clearer skies with fewer clouds, which is also ideal. Other factors that play into the visibility of the Aurora Borealis is solar activity, NASA has predicted that solar activity will be increased in the next few years, meaning that we will have a better chance than ever before to view this amazing phenomenon.
