This walk takes us up to Svenningen plateau, one of Støtt’s highest points, offers historical as well as scenic highlights. The impressive view makes it is easy to understand why the Germans during the occupation chose to build cannon positions and bunkers here.

What you will experience

The view from the plateau is spectacular! To the north across the open stretch of ocean called the Vestfjord are the jagged peaks of the Lofoten islands; to the south are many islands, with the Meløy Alps rising in the background.

Bring your camera to take advantage of the photo opportunities! Chances are you will see sea eagles soaring in the sky. Støtt is a major nesting area for Northern Europe’s largest bird of prey.

Our guided walk starts on the steamship quay. From here we proceed across the jetty, following the road north up to Svenningen plateau. As you explore the World War II bunkers and gun positions, the guide will tell you about their strategic significance and what life was like for the islanders of Støtt during the German occupation.

We’ll also visit a bunker that was used as a hospital, before walking over the ridge and descending at the southern end of the plateau.
